Several ppl asked me about what i think of Avatar and Princess and the Frog...
I was typing a really long review until I closed the window by accident!!!! So here's the shorten version.



AVATAR- 3D

STORY: Made the most impact on me, but it's depressingly happy, typical Hollywood romance.

It depresses me because it ended so "sweet," ideally... "happy ending" but actual history we are born in is so much crueler... such sweetness only awakes the taste of bitterness to the real world.
But it inspired me to do my own story better about the old history of settler vs natives. I nitpick the word "savages" spoken by the white guy, because it's the futuristic world, who uses that last last last century word? Stick with Alien or monster will be fine.
Shouting " protect our land" Also doesn't seem fitting for the nabi people because it has concept of "ownership," concept of ownership of a land is not developed unless it's a farming society, they are obviously hunters and gatherers.



CONCEPT ART: Love the plants, great models and post-production, I like how the whole world works like a network, trees with neuron cells like brains, awesome. The nabi people, awesome. I love how they glow in the dark, but don't really get why they are blue.... It looks good on the screen and hey, everyone loves blue.
I am not terribly impressed by the animal concept art, I find all the "strange animal look" very... "usual" because I have seen many similar designs in the concept art world. Especially that black dog/leopard like one, I don't know what it does or what it eats with 6 legs and that mouth. The rest of them looks believable to me, the concept of the rhino and the flying lizard looks good.


TECHNIQUE: They Pushed the bar up, set a new standard for motion capture and 3D world. (*looks up til her neck hurts) I want to learn about everything they did to make this film. The interaction between the filming process and 3D is.... seamless, that's where it's awesome. The only thing that gave it away believability for me is the overall super sharpness of every detail I see. Our eyes usually aren't seeing things that sharp all the time.




Princess and the Frog
STORY: They pushed the boundary of Disney classic animation storytelling, making it all... more American. A lovely twist on the originally European tale that does not involve a black princess. I hope to see more of the characters. They have a long life ahead of them.
I really relate to Tiana... and perhaps how people see her, because she's a typical career woman.
I like how her best friend is a rich spoiled, but lovable princess... O_o
I like the villain a lot, and the black mama.
I like how Disney creators make commentary in this film on the "princess" culture they created. lol~ And made corrections to the "princess culture" with the new characters.

I do think the pace is a bit... fast overall. But maybe its because i am watching it in theater, theater has more noise and people have reactions. Those things distracts me from the film. I hope to see it on DVD and see if the same problem persists.


ANIMATION/DESIGN: Classic Disney, the animation is standardized, smooth as usual, beautiful, and they make the dark skin look beautiful, desirable. But I don't feel they pushed any boundary despite the different styles.... I love the old disney look but I want to see more grounds being made to the next level in this medium.
And frankly, this is a cute film, it's not one of the epic story where you can break out swords,
castles, and other action type stuff like Beauty and the Beast. The forest scene with mama was gorgeous, however I do have enough of the dancing pink flamingos, I see it so much in regular Disney film.... I want to see other type of dancing animals if there's going to be dancing animals. Seeing a lot of them doesn't make it look epic.

To be honest, I hope once they get done with their collection of princess maybe they can move on with their.... er, more original stories... And make their own fairy tale.



LAST ENTRY:
On Christmas I did several things...

1. Play rock band with cousins
2. Went sledding, tried snowboarding but fell on my butt
3. Made dumplings with my cousins
4. Went to see movies, avatar and princess and the frog (finally!)
5. Drew sketches, lots of it! (about 90 pages worth of content) I miss making stories
6. Meet an old friend
7. Went to a christmas party in a local animation/adobe club
8. Did not go online for 2 days straight. lol (one client is hunting me now but... its ok.)
