Have you ever get jealous over someone's talent? Or think someone is better than you, and you are nothing? Have you ever said to someone "I wish I have your talent?"

If that's you, here is my tips for you.

Instead of just dwelling on that sour feeling of jealousy, do something about it.
First:

1) Remember: No one pops out good works like magic, no talent would shine without hard work. When you are envying, or complimenting other's "Talents" you are really complimenting their results of hard work. No matter how talented one can be, without hard work talents are NOTHING.

   a) Everyone has a different starts, different environments, different developments, different interests.
Everyone has a different start, a different environment, and different development... focus on developing yourself with what you have, and try to learn from whoever you can learn from.
Many artists are talented and gifted since their youth, but it's also their environment that plays a major role to cause the early development in their lives, versus some who start late, have family issues, or never was provided with the right directions.
People who start late will have their experience in life, and knowledge in other fields that are developed more than art skill, although taking longer to learn, they will be more determined to learn, they are already gifted with other life experience and knowledge to start on, they are the kind that will be able to give the art world a new perspective.

2) Use: Use whatever you have, if all you have is MS paint, use it until others would scream if they know it's MS paint you used to make your work. Use whatever medium and information you are provided with, and become the master of them.

3) Better tools doesn't always make better results: Though getting good tools is part of the battle, and some think having better tools will make their work better, like those they admire, or at least get there faster.
The fact is, you will take just as long to learn it anyway, often times the art foundation and basic skill have to be learned by years of practice, the advance tools also take time to learn, it's a lot harder and more troublesome to learn as well. Only proceed to advanced tools when you feel the current tool can no longer match up to your need.

4) Put down your ego: You can only learn when you put down your ego. If you are an older artist, and saw many young and talented ones, or others knowing what you don't know, you can feel threaten, but art is art, techniques are techniques, they are neutral things you can learn from anyone and everyone. So learn from whoever you can. You, learning something new is the most important part of the equation.

5) Race with yourself, and see others as inspiration. The wonderful thing of this world is variety... when you have developed well into one area of art, another person may have perfected another type of art you didn't think of doing... learn from one another, and only compare with yourself, "Did I do better this time than last time?" "I will not make the same mistake on my next one." "What can I do to improve from the last picture?"
Avoid letting the competition take too much weight in your heart, it can get you too pumped and lose the real focus, or depressed and become lack of passion. But if you see others as inspirations, it's much easier for you to learn and improve.

6) Go for a break through: My own quote is, "Whenever you are in a content stage with your work, it means it's time to learn something new." There is always room for improvement, in fact if you don't improve, your work will be "retired" by time. So always aim to improve yourself, do your best.

7) Don't beat yourself up: I don't know how many times I have said this... but... i will say it again. DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP. No one wants to see it, it annoys the artists whom you admire when you beat yourself up before them. Artists work hard for their work to be appreciated, treasured, they don't want to see someone else beating themselves up in their comment when they see the work! Beating yourself will only hold you down from moving forward, it's a WASTE of TIME and ENERGY! So think about improving, don't disapprove yourself.

And for some talented artists who still beat themselves up... Just don't do it... you are hurting your own confidence, and you might annoy your watchers, and still that will not shield you from criticism completely.

Replace: "I am not good enough" or "I suck" with
"I am good enough, but I can be better."

8) Age is just a number in the art world: I have seen artists who emerge in their 30s, 40s, even 50s, under the right direction, with determination, they can have amazing growth in a few years, so they say "age is just a number." You can too. If you let age bother you, you will never get where you need to be in skill.
Skill is what an employer look for.

9) Just focus on leveling up: Since now of days everyone plays games, I like using this analogy.

Think of leveling up your skills to do art as leveling up in a game, you need to keep using the skill and gain new skills for your class. The more you work at it, the more EXP you will have, and the higher level you are.

Art skills come with grinding, and you have to grind in the right direction, if you level up the wrong area, or use a wrong method, it does not work. So focus on leveling up and finding the right path for yourself and your art skills.

There's no shame in having less exp than others who already grinded to level 90 or 100 and you are level 5. Just go and grind your way through!
It's what you do with your jealousy that makes you a different person, here is some of my tips how to deal with such sour emotions~

Leveling up may come from hard work and experience but if you really work hard outside forces take interest in your predicament and advance you lightyears beyond your contemporaries. See my story about Santa for more! (or maybe it's God - all praise God!)
