How to cell shade 3 by mayshing How to cell shade 3 by mayshing
Part I | Part II | Part III

This is part 3.
I can not teach people about still life, i can not improve your drawing skill, all this tutorial can do is try to help you connect the concept between drawing still life, light source and cell shading art itself.

I try the "wrongs" but maybe I don't do it "wrong" enough in some cases... you need a lot of these little wrongs all add together to look REALLY WRONG. But i hope some of you can recall cases when you saw those mistakes.

Hope it helps.

You, take my soul <33 Because most of the things I thought I was doing right, and that I only had to practice, I was doing wrong. I thought of it like: ''Oh never mind, add some stupid lines out of no where'' .. Thanks again :)

I've never actually taken an art class, so this is very helpful! I'm so horrible with light sources D:

Thank you for this! <3

Apparently, I do some of those wrongs... consistantly and very often.

This helps... a lot. Thank you very much.

This helps me actually understand more on how to digitally shade, my comic may be saved yet. But how would you shade a spherical object, like a container in a dark room that is holding a person in a glowing liquid substance?

This was a sort of wake-up call! Your "wrong shading" version is almost exactly what I do. It gave me a "whoops" moment. Thanks!

Thank you, I shall refer to this for whenever I draw next. However, may I ask, what about light from alll around you? Like if your character uses a magic whatever around them causing light in all directions, how would you shade that? Thank you for the tutorials though :3

most common solution is make one big light, usually people use the focus magic area, like maybe the fireball in front, or the lower light from the magic circle from below... then the rest of the lights they practically make it weak lights, where the bounce lights do not influence the character that strongly (even if they look big). In order to keep the visual focus on the main light that provides the major depth.

Alright Thank you! So either have the magic cast circle from below be the main light, and then dot around for the others,or just decide which one is the most important? That helps alot, thank you! :3

np. I personally had that question before myself. For things that don't exist, just use other closest ref is how people usually go about it. ^^ If you watch anime carefully you will notice most don't even do the lighting reflection, they just blur things. lol

Woww, I knew my shading was pretty darn bad already but I can't believe how many mistakes I was making. That and I just need more proper practice, I throw my shading on my art without considering the light sources and shapes way too often. ^^; Thanks a lot for these tutorials! They're very, very helpful.

i'm glad they help. o.o I'm surprised by how several webcomic artists I'm friends with come to thank me for this.

I didn't really pay attention to your shading until now that you mentioned it. lol
Usually people overlook partial mistakes unless its in the wrong, wrong area (like face) if you threw it wrong around the neck, collar bone, or clothing, but if they are small... most tend not to notice. But of course, if you threw it in right, overall feel just works much stronger.
I don't get it right all the time, either.

like i say... do the still life first, then think about more advance things. Another simple way to learn landscape is simply copy someone else's work for study (but don't post it on DA without permission or link back so u won't get trouble)
