Okami means simply wolf, while Usagi means Rabbit. Usagi is the young man and his full name is Usagi Shinso, Rabbit of Truth. He's also called the Black Rabbit a refrence to death itself if you go by some english lore and the book Watership Down.
I'd be glad to note you with the story behind these two if you really want to hear more.
Why a rabbit? I knew I was forgetting another definition for Usagi...
Okami was actually used for the pun...everone prbably knows it,but if you didn't, it means "Great God" and "Wolf" at the same time...one kanji for wolf, ookami, and two kanji for "great god", which is either oo kami or o kami. I forget. o_o
But yeah, the Kanji for Okami the game is actually "great god".
Rabbit because his name was both a joke off of Usagi from Sailer Moon and a homage to the Black Rabbit from the book Watership Down.
*chuckles* I used the same pun when I named my Okami. He's one of the oldest of the monsters... well for lack of a better term, the King of the Monsters. And since he looks like a wolf mostly I liked the idea.
Okami has a brother too, but his brother is a black wolf made of fog and darkness. He's named Rets. It was originally short for something like Rasputain or some such but can't remember any more.
