huh, so far on stats, male leads are preferred, and there is alot more girls than guys who responded. Personally I prefer male for 2 reasons:
1)I am able to relate with male characters easier, while female leads can have other main character males in the series, in most cases they are flawed, wimpy, or pretty much not worth the time. Very few times have I found a female lead anime or manga that has a male cast that I can identify with.
2)Male characters have less problems in general. A female lead has many issues that can come up during a series, for instance romance. Male lead series can go without any romance and have the main character almost be a celibate if it wasn't for some comments he might make. On the other hand if you have a female lead, it can become weird for her to never have any romantic feelings, it is commonly thought, though not always the case, that women are more based off of emotions and feelings. Compared to males which can be completely emotionless and cold and be thought cool, emotionless and cold females are usually rarer. Not to mention I think the writers in some cases just want to have have their female characters become romantically involved, for drama sakes. Many things can be done with romantic characters, betrayal, death, cheating, all of these things can be applied to the relationship to create unique situations for the characters to deal with. Not to mention seeing a guy getting his butt kicked and almost killed is different from seeing a woman get her butt kicked and almost killed. In a way we are more use to seeing males take damage then we are females, or at least I am.
Oh well, decided to comment on the poll because I had a thought or two concerning it.
good points, i thought of similar things before too. I am just surprised that even girls have preferred male lead more than female lead.... O_o I think we have all grown up in the male-lead society and got used to it.
yes, there is... just rare. My hypothesis is... male lead society tends to be focused on hunters, while female ones tend to be farmers based, and hunter society tend to be more aggressive and end up being the ruler, and thus, eventually over powers the female lead-society, making female-lead tribal society rare, and hardly develop into something like a massive nation. :/
One tribe in china is still female lead, matriarchy system, and some native american tribe had female holy women so it's woman lead, and of course we can trace the roots back to Africa where some female goddess was worshipped.
well actually i don't care cause i think if the story is good it either doesn't matter if the leading chara is male or female or the story is good and has to be lead by either male or female. So both is fine with me
